kata

Karate Kata

Kata is a Japanese word meaning "form". It refers to a detailed choreographed pattern of martial arts movements. It is practised as a way to memorize and perfect the movements being executed.

Kata can be practised alone or in groups When practicing in a group we try to keep the timing in unison, this not only looks good, but helps you practice your peripheral vision/spatial awareness (and stops you bumping into each other, or worse).

Each Kata has its own distinct principles and applications, (the meditation) that generally become more complex the higher grade the Kata is. Some Kata's also have unique therapeutic properties from stimulating life force and stretching muscles, to strengthening bones and tendons even massaging internal organs. While different breathing patterns can improve blood circulation and lung capacity.

Go to this page to see videos of all the grade Kata’s and the basic strikes, Blocks and stances etc.
