Good hygiene is important as it helps you stay healthy and stops you and others getting sick from infection.
Our policy is that all students, instructors and other participants should follow these recommendations to maintain or improve personal hygiene while in the Dojo:
- Sanitise your hands regularly.
You should sanitise your hands before entering the training area, before and after cleaning duties, during breaks between training activities, and after going to the toilet.
- Begin class wearing a properly washed and dried GI/uniform or sports clothes.
Unwashed clothes carry bacteria. Training in unwashed clothes may cause bacteria to be rubbed into the skin, causing a staph infection, MRSA infection, or ringworm which may also be transmitted to training partners.
- Trim your finger and toe nails
Regardless of your gender, trim your nails short before coming to class. You can scrape or cut your partner’s skin and eyes with long nails when you train, or injure yourself when they get caught on clothes.
- Tie long hair back
Tie your hair back to avoid it interfering with training. Braiding hair is more effective than tying it back.
- Don’t come to class if you’re sick.
If you’re unwell and come to train, you’re not in the best state for learning, and may pass your illness to others. Stay away from class until you’ve fully recovered.
- Remove jewellery before training
Before entering the training area, remove rings, earrings, necklaces, anklets or other jewellery. Wearing jewellery while training risks damage to your jewellery, and scraping or cutting you or someone else’s skin.
- Wrap any cuts with tape
If you have minor cuts, wrap them with durable medical or athletic tape to reduce the risk of infection by bacteria.
- Shower or bath promptly after training
This is important as it lessens the chance of you incurring skin diseases, and makes you smell better.
